The Freakiest and Most Chilling Murders… Commited by Children

Every time you look at a newspaper, you can guarantee there’ll be something about ‘the youth of today.’ However, worries about the influence of rock music or violent movies pale in comparison with the true crimes of children who kill. The phenomenon of children who commit horrifying murders has been around since reporting began, and the details are truly shocking. These are 6 of the most chilling murders committed by children that I have ever read about – and the perpetrators were all under the age of 14.Warning: horrifying content.

1. Jesse Pomeroy, 11

Location: Boston, 1874

Pomeroy sexually tortured 7 small boys from the age of 11, but he soon progressed to murder. He killed a 10-year-old girl who visited his mother’s shop, but the crime that grabbed headlines was his brutal killing of 4-year-old Horace Mullen.

Pomeroy attacked the child so savagely with a knife that the he almost severed his head. Police approached Pomeroy before evidence directed them to him – he drew attention because of his criminal history and his unusual milky eye. When asked if he killed the children he replied, ‘I suppose I did.’

Insane Fact: Pomeroy taught himself many languages in the following decades in prison, and also performed in a minstrel show.

2. Christopher Pittman, 12

Location: South Carolina, 2001

Pittman’s young life was troubled, having run away from the home of his neglectful parents. After a spell at a juvenile care facility, he went to live with his grandparents. After a fight, Pittman snuck into their room at night and killed them both with his grandfather’s shotgun. He tried to drive away but was apprehended by police, when he confessed – but never showed any remorse.

Insane Fact: The case gained notoriety because Pittman had been switched from Paxil to the anti-depressant Zoloft, which the USFDA assert can lead to ‘an increased risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in short-term studies of adolescents and children.’

3. Girl A, 11

Location: Japan, 2004

During a regular school day at Okubo Elementary, a teacher realized two students were missing. Shortly afterwards, only one returned – covered in blood. Searching for the missing girl, the teacher found 12-year-old Satomi Mitari dead, her throat slashed with a box cutter.

The killer, the 11-year-old blood-spattered girl, known only as ‘Girl A’ due to anonymity laws, told cops she had argued online with Mitari, confessing by saying, ‘I have done a bad thing. I am sorry. I am sorry.’

Insane Fact: Japanese politician Sadakazu Tanigaki was criticized by the press for describing Girl A’s murder method of throat-slashing as ‘manly,’ which some saw as complimentary.

4. Dedrick Owens, 6

Location: Michigan, 2000

Officially the youngest school shooter ever, 6-year-old Dedrick Owens found a .32 caliber handgun in his uncle’s house, shooting dead his classmate Kayla Rolland in front of 22 other students.

Owens was never charged because of his extreme young age, but his uncle and two other men were imprisoned for involuntary manslaughter.

Insane Fact: the incident was touched on in the movie Bowling for Columbine.

5. Jamarion Lawhorn, 12

Location: Michigan, 2014

Lawhorn was playing with 9-year-old Michael Verkerke – who he had never met before – in a public playground when he stabbed the child in the back.

The killer then approached local Glen Stacy, who described Jamarion as ‘eerily calm,’ and asked to borrow his mobile phone. Stacy was stunned when Lawhorn called the police, saying:

Hi. I just stabbed somebody. I want to die. I don’t want to be on this earth anymore. Please pick me up.

Insane Fact: Despite Jamarion affirming to police he understood what he’d done, there are tragically childlike qualities to his actions. When police arrived and went to help the victim, Jamarion shouted at them, ‘Hello. I’m right here. You’re going the wrong way.’

6. Mary Bell, 10

Location: England, 1968

Mary Bell was only 10 years old when she killed 4-year-old Martin Brown and 3-year-old Brian Howe. Originally, Brown’s death was recorded as an open verdict – Mary had strangled him, but her little hands were too small and weak to leave marks on his neck typical of strangulation.

Howe, Mary took to an old industrial site, where she killed him, mutilated with a pair of broken scissors, and carved an ‘M’ into his stomach. Inspector James Dobson, assigned to the case found it chilling, saying of Howe’s wounds:

There was a terrible playfulness about it, a terrible gentleness if you like, and somehow the playfulness of it made it more, rather than less, terrifying.

Insane Fact: Mary Bell was released from prison in 1980 and has been living under an anonymity order in regular society ever since..
