1. Getting distracted by your phone.

Is there anything more awful than talking to someone while they’re checking their phone? This is a big first date no-no. Facebook can wait, dude.

2. Talking about your mom too much.

It’s pretty sweet at first, but for the love of all that is holy, stahp. Your mom is a nice gal; still, there’s a time and place for the mom talk.

3. Talking about your ex too much.

UGH. STAHP.

4. Talking about yourself too much.

Maybe just stop talking so much?

5. Having food stuck in your teeth.

A classic error. Your story about the time you saved 11 puppies from a burning school bus will go unnoticed if you have a giant hunk of steak stuck in your teeth.

6. Checking out other people.

This may be an unstoppable habit now, but just don’t. It’s quite obviously one of the worst things you could do on a first date (or any date, for that matter).

7. Seeing a depressing movie.

Yeah, everyone loves Blue Valentine, but for the first date, try something uplifting and fun. You can’t go wrong with a comedy!

8. Overdressing.

Don’t wear an elegant dress or a fancy suit. Unless you’re going on a date to a wedding, funeral, or awards show.

9. Underdressing.

SO MANY RULES. Wear a nice shirt and some nice pants, just don’t make it look like you’re trying… but don’t try so hard that it looks like you’re trying not to try. Got it?

10. Farting in front of your date.

Does this require explanation? Don’t fart on your date… unless he/she is into that. If that’s the case, then by all means, fart on your date.
